Description Built in 1929, the 'Huey P' is as vital today as it ever was. It was named after Louisiana Governor Huey P. Long, whom played a major role in improving the Louisiana transportation system. Governor Long was assassinated on September 10, 1935, three months before the bridge was complete. On December 16, 1935, the bridge opened to traffic and became known as the Huey P. Long Bridge.
